We take the following factors into consideration when cleaning carpet water damage:
Carpet Type
Not all carpet types are the same. There are different carpet constructions and the different types respond to water differently. The last thing you want is for your water damaged carpet to shrink when water damage occurs. We have been trained to identify these carpet types and we know what procedure has to be used to correct the moisture level and clean the carpets. The type of carpets that will generally shrink with water damage include:

Cellulose Browning (Browning to your carpet)
This happens when the jute backing of the carpet gets wet. This causes the wicking of the cellulose from the jute backing to the surface of the carpet. It will literally show up as a brown stain on your carpet. It is possible to correct browning to your carpet. We have to use several products such as mild acids, low levels of hydrogen peroxide or mild reducing agents. Remember we have been trained to use these chemicals and we know what we are doing so we don’t suggest you using these chemicals at home. They can be dangerous if not used properly.
Jute Backing is much more popular in Australia and England however it is not so popular in the US.
Carpet Delamination
This is a very common problem in water damage and can be avoided in some situations. Delamination is the separation of the secondary backing from the primary backing of the carpet. When delamination is caused by a water damage, all parties will be informed as is usually unrepairable. Potential causes for delamination include:
Handling of Carpet during water damage repairs
The latex in the backing is weakened when wet and will usually regain its strength when it dries. The carpet restorer needs to be careful not to excessively bend, flex or stretch the carpet. Also the restorer needs to ensure the extraction of water from the carpet is done carefully and the carpet does not flap when being dried by an air mover. Stepping on the carpet while it is folded can also cause delamination.
Poor Maintenance
Foot traffic from abrasive soils sitting inside the carpets can over time cut into the adhesives and accelerates its decomposition.
Carpet Age
The latex can break down over time and cause delamination. However this is not usually a problem unless the carpet is at an age beyond its life expectancy
Improper Installation
Too much carpet cushion can lead to delimitation of the carpet. Also the carpet layer may not have correctly stretched the carpet when laying it.
